15th century | Fuschl Castle was built during the second half of the 15th century as a hunting lodge for the archbishops of Salzburg, who owned the castle as the local overlords until 1803 (secularisation). |
1545 | First mention of a court hunt on Fuschlsee Lake under Archbishop Ernst Herzog of Bavaria (administrator 1540 – 1554). |
1640 | Fuschl Castle was clearly shown for the first time on the map of the »State and Prince-Archbishopric of Salzburg together with the Neighbouring Coherentzn (neighbourhoods)« by Marx Setznagel (around 1525 – 1580). |
1816 | After the ecclesiastical-imperial principality of Salzburg was dissolved, the castle’s ownership passed to the Austrian state and the castle was managed by the Saltworks Administration Office. Until 1833, it remained largely uninhabited and increasingly fell into disrepair. |
1833 – 1928 | The castle was repeatedly leased to private individuals, inherited and sold, as well as being partially renovated. In 1918, it was sold to the two brothers Eduard Mayer from Hotel Postwirt and Martin Mayer from the Baderluck Guesthouse in Hof, and in 1925 it passed to the sole ownership of Hotel Postwirt. |
1929 | The castle was purchased by Gustav Nikolaus Edler von Remiz (1888 – 1939) and his wife Hedwig, a granddaughter of German tycoon August Thyssen. Remiz turned out to be a great sponsor of the Hof near Salzburg parish. As an opponent of the Nazi system, he was arrested in 1938 and died at Dachau concentration camp in 1939. His possessions were seized. |
1939 | During the Nazi era, Fuschl Castle was used as a residence and representative office of Joachim Ribbentrop, Foreign Minister of Nazi Germany (1893 – 1946). |
1945 | After World War 2, the castle was requisitioned by US troops and from 1945 – 1947 served as a convalescent home for American officers. |
1947 | »Castle hotel« was established, forming the basis for later use as a hotel. |
1954 | The estate was leased by Harriet Countess Walderdorff. |
1959 – 1977 | The castle was under the ownership of Carl Adolf Vogel (1906 – 1993), the Honorary Consul of Argentina and operator of the Bavarian Saltworks – also nicknamed the “Salt Baron”. He was married to actress Winnie Markus (1921 – 2002). The 9-hole golf coursewas added in 1964. Carl Adolf Vogel bought Vorau Farm, where he opened the Jagdhof Guesthouse in 1970. |
1977 – 2000 | Acquisition by the Max-Grundig Foundation on 20 May 1981, Fuschl Castle was declared a listed building due to its historic, artistic and cultural significance. On 3 June1984, the Dr. Max Grundig Foundation gifted the natural beach on the western shore of Fuschlsee Lake to the Hof near Salzburg parish. |
2001 | Stefan Schörghuber (1961 – 2008), from the Munich family of entrepreneurs, acquired the estate, which remains in 100 % private ownership to the present day and is managed by the Schörghuber family of entrepreneurs. |
