After being sentenced, offenders would be taken to the prison. Once the trapdoor had been closed above him, the prisoner would be completely isolated in the cellar.
He would be chained to a wall, and there would only be a tiny barred window, a stone pallet and stone seats. This is where he would have to spend his “Keichtage” on bread and water only. Prisoners were entirely dependent on the mercy of their guards. What a dreary image!
